Three years ago, I had the honor of meeting the captivating Maestra Altomesayoq Doña Maria. At 96 years old, Doña Maria radiates an energy that is difficult to put into words. Truly embodying the spirit of the high Andes, her life in the quaint village of Q’ero nation is one filled with depth and purpose. However, it wasn't easy to meet her. Our paths seemed to miss each other each time I visited her village.
Perhaps I wasn't ready to experience her medicine, her wisdom, her healing power. Perhaps, there was more work I needed to do before I could sit with her. Nevertheless, divine timing stepped in when it was time. Within three years, I finally had the opportunity to work with this powerful healer.
The Unfolding of Doña Maria’s Spirit
Six months after our encounter, I began to witness her medicine unfold before my eyes. Doña Maria’s spirit resonated deeply, reminding me of the comfort and familiarity of home. Her childlike nature and free spirit echoed those of my grandfather — a deep love and appreciation for life, not taking things too seriously yet deeply passionate and devoted to their craft.

What adds to Doña Maria's fascinating persona is that she is an Altomesayoq — a title held by only a handful of people alive today. The path to becoming an Altomesayoq is undeniably challenging. One must withstand a lightning strike as part of their initiation procedure, symbolizing their choice to devote their life to a path selected by forces greater than themselves.
An Altomesayoq is said to have a unique communion with the spirit world and can access realms invisible to many people. Unlike a Pampa Mesayoq Paqo Shaman, their profound knowledge cannot be passed down, making their societal role even more significant and respected.
